I am super excited about this project. I have been looking for something like this for a long time. When I say "like this" I mean better than mythTV and other similar options.

Now a question from my side, in your post Fred you mention Boxee becoming commercial?
I thought it would be free? Or will it be commercial when they pass the beta status?
free. The "commercialization" Fred mentions is the process of builing
a busines around an open source software project, which has plenty of
precedence in other successful open source services (Red Hat, MySQL,
etc...).
What many do and I think is a great idea is they get a HD LCD projector and
project their macbook up on the wall
It works great and makes me wonder why I ever bought a 60² plasma display
(actually 2 of them)
I'd appreciate an invite as well
Thank you in advance!
Can I get an invite Fred?
However, the thing that is most intriguing about the boxee crew is their interaction with their community. Be it forum posting...or frequent tweets...they have truly cultivated a community.
I think that, long term, it will be interesting to see how the streaming media sector itself is affected by the bandwidth shaping of service providers. The roku forums are awash right now with people complaining of time based degradation of streaming service. There is no verification that the issue is provider based and not something less sinister...but considering the impact is an interesting thought exercise none the less.
Congratulations to the Boxee team and to Union Square Ventures. Best of Luck!
I created a way to get your hulu queue into boxee for easy content management... hopefully boxee adds something a bit more straight forward in the future but I have around 250 users of my service now.

I'd loaded XMBC on my Xbox and on an Ubuntu machine in the past. I'd certainly love to get this up and running as well - and obviously compare them. Thanks Fred, looking forward to an invite if its possible.

interface. Any thought on behalf of the boxee team of adding an iPhone
remote app a la Remote or Sonos?
Here's why: I just tried watching a rented itunes movie on my Sony Bravia and got surprise when an "unauthorized display" alert popped up. The new macbook pro detected the external display and promptly shut it down the movie : (

This is actually where Apple TV has shined until now, because of its tremendous Podcast library.
I'm glad Boxee is expanding its podcast library and I hope they continue to support indy media.
extensions)
That means that even if they spend most of their dev resources on the head
of the tail, the indie content world can be supported by the community
That does not mean they will do that, I am just making a bigger point about
open software and why it wins
I still hope Boxee focuses on building in the long-tail of content.
Using the Apple/iTunes example again, there's an instance where a
centralizing force has built the best directory and easiest access to
decentralized content.
Again, very cool. I look forward to trying it out.

Feature suggestion: integration w/ a Slingbox feed. I view via a SlingPlayer constantly across multiple locations, but there's no good way to control it other than w/ a mouse.
This is a great space to invest in. Internet is the cable tv of tomorrow... today. I'd love an invite.
I have been waiting on an invite for a few weeks. If you have one, I would appreciate it. Thanks.....

comes. Many thanks.
I've been a big supporter of XBMC for years (donated as well)...unfortunately my Xbox has been orphaned, but maybe Boxee can get me back into it.
In the next 3 years we need dire improvements in UI and input method to make this a compelling way to use your TV...
I think I've said no to at least half of the entrepreneurs we ended up
backing
The way they handled it is they listened, understood why it was wrong for
me, fixed it, and then came back

Was just talking to my wife about replacing our satellite with NetFlix but she loves CNN. So I was excited to see Boxee!
I've been looking for something like this for the last two years. Wanted to find something that reminded me of Vonage when it first came out. Thought I might have found it with NetFlix and Roku but this looks even better! If it works out I'll be saying goodbye to my sattelite provider.
Does for the TV what Vonage did for the phone...neat!

I sent you an invite to your podglo email address
I hope that's ok
That's fine. Thanks for sending it so quickly.

Looks very promising. I'd love to give it a try.
Just talked about it on Moxie Mo Show #32 for those interested in knowing more... http://www.moxiemoshow.com/moxie-mo-show-32
Talked about it on Moxie Mo Show (www.moxiemoshow.com) and Geekbrief TV and finally got my invite!
the question for us is whether we spend time porting boxee to run on these (relatively) old boards, or look to the next-gen versions coming from Intel, Sigma, etc.
btw, i agree the pizza is crappy

I'd love an invite for Boxee. But I'm confused by your statement:
All of this happens because the Mac Mini has a great HDMI interface,
I don't see an HDMI port on Apple's Mac Mini spec page:
http://www.apple.com/macmini/specs.html
Don't I have to get a DVI adapter and use a separate audio cable?
Thanks,

I'll chase down the HDMI confusion
I just sent an invite
Thanks for the invite!
The Mac Mini has only a DVI output, no HDMI. However, you can buy an
DVI to HDMI cable so you can use the HDMI input on your AV receiver or
other device to carry the video signal, but you still have to
separately patch in the audio from the Mini to your AV receiver. There
is a $79.95 device from Apogee that converts incoming DVI + Audio to a
true HDMI output, but not sure why someone would want to spend the
money on that.
Anyway I plan to bring my MacBook Pro downstairs today and hook it up
to my projection system and try Boxee on it. Next step will be to buy
a Mac Mini.
A remote control app for the iPhone and iPod touch a la the remote
control for iTunes would be nice. I can't stand the Apple remote I got
with my AppleTV, which thanks to Boxee looks like it is headed for
eBay or to one of my kids.
Best,
--Steve
The laptop to projector setup may, in fact, be the killer app for boxee

Boxee has a fix that should be out today or tomorrow
Is it usable in Europe too? If so I would like to test the alpha.
eMail would be thorsten.gueltekin (at) ebs.de
It's totally usable in europe although some of the streaming services might
require you to set up a proxy (you can do that in boxee)
I'd like to test it to see if our sites pending video rollout could incoprorate high bandwidth HD encodes that would be made available for Boxee

question for you VC types: is there a way for us normal folk to get in on the investment action – a la online "micro-lending" and akin to the Obama campaigns solicitation of small donations (except those don't offer an ROI of course).
i definitely see the "media center firefox" potential of boxee and would like to place a modest amount of cash into it, if it could be structured in a way that provides a small percentage of equity!
There are all kinds of regulations that get in the way
Hmm, gonna think about it
Great question. You've inspired a blog post
http://www.avc.com/a_vc/2008/11/getting-a-piece...
My biggest disappointment was flickr - I begged them for months when they first released their photo sharing site to allow me to invest a small sum (under $30K). Even though they needed cash, they couldn't consider such a small individual investment. Same with a few other gems I spotted early on.
I can only think of the old cliche' - it takes money to make money.
I would love the opportunity to view this app. Please send an invite when you get a free moment, if you have any left. Thank you sir!
thanks for this.

Boxee might be open to providing the software for your device
Enter your email there and you'll have an invite within 24 hours
Invite sent!
They'll announce it there first
I would be interested in being in the Windows alpha if still available. Also, sent you a separate email.
