Union Square Ventures: Boxee

  • BK · 1 year ago
I've signed up on the website, but if an invite can get me in the door quicker. Please do. Email should be in the comment info for you.

I am super excited about this project. I have been looking for something like this for a long time. When I say "like this" I mean better than mythTV and other similar options.
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
i will send out all the invites tonight. easier for me to do it that way.
  • Lee Schneider · 1 year ago
Fred, count me in for an invite. Now if I could find an easy way to get my macbook linked up to my TV...

I'd also love an invite to Boxee. Thanks in advance.

    I've invited you :)

Now a question from my side, in your post Fred you mention Boxee becoming commercial?

I thought it would be free? Or will it be commercial when they pass the beta status?
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
It is free to end users
  • andrewparker · 1 year ago
Boxee is open source and wil continue to be open source, and thus
free. The "commercialization" Fred mentions is the process of builing
a busines around an open source software project, which has plenty of
precedence in other successful open source services (Red Hat, MySQL,
    etc...).
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
Lee, I just sent an invite

What many do and I think is a great idea is they get a HD LCD projector and
project their macbook up on the wall

It works great and makes me wonder why I ever bought a 60² plasma display
    (actually 2 of them)

It is definitely an intriguing sector...and, having spent substantial time looking for a solution for our own home theater, boxee is the furthest along in both number of connected services and interface simplicity. The competition is non-trivial (in large part dedicated hardware devices ala netflix streaming), but they open approach of additive connectivity without being locked to a specific service makes the boxee solution the most compelling.

However, the thing that is most intriguing about the boxee crew is their interaction with their community. Be it forum posting...or frequent tweets...they have truly cultivated a community.

I think that, long term, it will be interesting to see how the streaming media sector itself is affected by the bandwidth shaping of service providers. The roku forums are awash right now with people complaining of time based degradation of streaming service. There is no verification that the issue is provider based and not something less sinister...but considering the impact is an interesting thought exercise none the less.

Congratulations to the Boxee team and to Union Square Ventures. Best of Luck!
  • danb · 1 year ago
This is great news, Fred! I'm so glad to see you get behind this product.

I created a way to get your hulu queue into boxee for easy content management... hopefully boxee adds something a bit more straight forward in the future but I have around 250 users of my service now.

We're currently using MythTV (on Linux running on a Shuttle SFF PC, attached to a HD Projector via HDMI) and it's kinda iffy. I really hope this is the solution to the media centre problem. Hope it works out for Boxee! Invite would be awesome. (you can see my email address, right?)
  • danvers · 1 year ago
Bugger. I knew I should not have sold my wife's spare mac mini - I was convinced there was a use for it but was not sure what. Now I have read this, I know.
  • mavryx · 1 year ago
Certainly sounds like something with great potential. I've had no cable service for over two years now, getting my media from webcasts, hulu, youtube, and torrents.

I'd loaded XMBC on my Xbox and on an Ubuntu machine in the past. I'd certainly love to get this up and running as well - and obviously compare them. Thanks Fred, looking forward to an invite if its possible.
  • Yaron Samid · 1 year ago

What did Jobs say on the last earnings call relatd to Apple TV?
  • hypermark · 1 year ago
Got it. Thanks. One of the analysts was asking about new product launches in the quarter/year ahead and asked specifically about Apple TV roadmap; Jobs said something to the effect of "expect no big surprises in 2009." That's consistent with the Apple TV is a hobby mantra.
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
Well boxee is putting out new releases about once a week right now. And their roadmap is ambitious and agressive
  • hypermark · 1 year ago
Eager to see (roadmap); from their blog, it is clear that they have the right idea for rolling out a product like this: ship the idea, fix, iterate. What they need in rapid fashion is to collapse messaging that is scattered across web site, blog, forums and wiki, as while I know they are alpha (NOT beta, IMHO) and thus more ready for true techies, there are nonetheless a lot of meta-techies that would test drive if there was a clearer out of the box experience. Plus, there is a real first mover opp to start evangelizing what it means to be a social media center. CHEERS.

This is exciting news and I'd love to try it out as well.

Here's why: I just tried watching a rented itunes movie on my Sony Bravia and got surprise when an "unauthorized display" alert popped up. The new macbook pro detected the external display and promptly shut it down the movie : (

I'm most curious about the role of Boxee in the "Future of the Podcast." I love to watch Hulu clips and stuff from the major networks (I'm cable free for over a year!!), but user generated content is the best.

This is actually where Apple TV has shined until now, because of its tremendous Podcast library.

I'm glad Boxee is expanding its podcast library and I hope they continue to support indy media.
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
Its open source Nate so anyone can build an extension to boxee (like FF
    extensions)

That means that even if they spend most of their dev resources on the head
of the tail, the indie content world can be supported by the community

That does not mean they will do that, I am just making a bigger point about
open software and why it wins
  • innonate · 1 year ago
I hear your bigger point loud and clear.

I still hope Boxee focuses on building in the long-tail of content.
Using the Apple/iTunes example again, there's an instance where a
centralizing force has built the best directory and easiest access to
    decentralized content.
  • KiltBear · 1 year ago
Sounds very cool. With QuickTime being such an integral part of the OS, it is a shame that you limit playing the media to non-DRMed media (if I understood the video correctly). I would think you should be able to play the protected AAC files, and maybe even the iTunes TV shows and Movies.

Again, very cool. I look forward to trying it out.

I've been using XBMC (stands for Xbox Media Center) as core to a home media center project I've been working on for a while, sponsored by HP and Sharp, and it's been key. But like w/ many products where there can be a free vs paid variety, I'm more than willing to pay for advanced features in a commercialized product.

Feature suggestion: integration w/ a Slingbox feed. I view via a SlingPlayer constantly across multiple locations, but there's no good way to control it other than w/ a mouse.

Was just talking to my wife about replacing our satellite with NetFlix but she loves CNN. So I was excited to see Boxee!

I've been looking for something like this for the last two years. Wanted to find something that reminded me of Vonage when it first came out. Thought I might have found it with NetFlix and Roku but this looks even better! If it works out I'll be saying goodbye to my sattelite provider.

Now that I can watch YouTube and order crappy pizza on my TiVo I want boxee on there next - would it run on a low-end linux box like TiVo's HD?
  • avneron · 1 year ago
the TiVo HD is running a Broadcom processor, which is too weak to handle boxee at the moment. the TiVo box is also closed (but that could be solved... :))

the question for us is whether we spend time porting boxee to run on these (relatively) old boards, or look to the next-gen versions coming from Intel, Sigma, etc.

btw, i agree the pizza is crappy

I'd love an invite for Boxee. But I'm confused by your statement:

All of this happens because the Mac Mini has a great HDMI interface,

I don't see an HDMI port on Apple's Mac Mini spec page:

Don't I have to get a DVI adapter and use a separate audio cable?

    Hi steve

I'll chase down the HDMI confusion

  • sbayle · 1 year ago
    Hi, Fred

    Thanks for the invite!

The Mac Mini has only a DVI output, no HDMI. However, you can buy an
DVI to HDMI cable so you can use the HDMI input on your AV receiver or
other device to carry the video signal, but you still have to
separately patch in the audio from the Mini to your AV receiver. There
is a $79.95 device from Apogee that converts incoming DVI + Audio to a
true HDMI output, but not sure why someone would want to spend the
    money on that.

Anyway I plan to bring my MacBook Pro downstairs today and hook it up
to my projection system and try Boxee on it. Next step will be to buy
    a Mac Mini.

A remote control app for the iPhone and iPod touch a la the remote
control for iTunes would be nice. I can't stand the Apple remote I got
with my AppleTV, which thanks to Boxee looks like it is headed for
eBay or to one of my kids.

    Best,

    --Steve

I would like an invite. I tried to sign up at the site a few days ago, but they say it will be weeks to get in. My wife and I recently moved into a new house and have not had cable for four months. I was looking for a product to aggregate all of our media, and this looks just like what I want.

It looks like the Apple TV update to 2.3 voided my Boxee experimentations... After receiving my Boxee invite I bought an Apple TV with version 1.0, then proceed to update to 2.3, which was released yesterday.

Let's hope we see a quick update and hopefully Boxee hasn't created an enemy in Apple.
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
    I just heard about this

Boxee has a fix that should be out today or tomorrow
  • Thorsten · 1 year ago
    Sounds interesting.

Is it usable in Europe too? If so I would like to test the alpha.

eMail would be thorsten.gueltekin (at) ebs.de
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
    I sent an invite

It's totally usable in europe although some of the streaming services might
require you to set up a proxy (you can do that in boxee)
  • marcelorpm · 1 year ago
I'd love to alpha test it; I've been in line for a couple of months now and a shortcut addition would be great!

I signed up a few weeks ago and I would love an invite.
I'd like to test it to see if our sites pending video rollout could incoprorate high bandwidth HD encodes that would be made available for Boxee

I heart boxee too – run it off by new alunibody macbook.

question for you VC types: is there a way for us normal folk to get in on the investment action – a la online "micro-lending" and akin to the Obama campaigns solicitation of small donations (except those don't offer an ROI of course).

i definitely see the "media center firefox" potential of boxee and would like to place a modest amount of cash into it, if it could be structured in a way that provides a small percentage of equity!
  • fredwilson · 1 year ago
I wish we could do that

There are all kinds of regulations that get in the way

    Hmm, gonna think about it

Great question. You've inspired a blog post

I've looked for such "micro-lending" opportunities for a long time. Have never found one. It's unfortunate that it's not done.

My biggest disappointment was flickr - I begged them for months when they first released their photo sharing site to allow me to invest a small sum (under $30K). Even though they needed cash, they couldn't consider such a small individual investment. Same with a few other gems I spotted early on.

I can only think of the old cliche' - it takes money to make money.

In fact this is particularly good, i recently moved to the US and am in the process of setting up home. One of the things that are on my to-do list is to set up cable for the tv. And given that i am huge "movie" buff i really thought that is the first activity i would get to , But surprise surprise, its been 2 months and still hasn't been set up. I am pleased with what i am getting on the internet across the various content sources. Of course the problem has been finding the right sources etc and whole user interface problem. I think Boxee is a great solution for the same. But i run on windows any news when the player will be available?

I've just found about Boxee and I can't wait to give it a try. I have a Shuttle with Vista MCE in my living room and the fan noise alone drives me nuts. To have something running on a silent Mac Mini or ATV would be great. If you've got any of those invites still going I'd really love one!! elliottlaporte [a] gmail.com
